Jan. 28, 2014 – Sansay™, Inc., a pioneer of developing high performance, software-based VoIP infrastructure for the communication services provider market, today announced that it has been granted a U.S. patent for a process that enables providers to offer enhanced Web-based multimedia services more quickly and reliably.
The patent describes a method for telecommunications services providers to deliver audio, video and multimedia services through an Internet relay provided by a session border controller (SBC) without routing packets through a network device called a TURN server. The process yields faster connections, a better user experience, greater scalability, improved reliability and greater protection against denial-of-service attacks.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Sansay patent No. 8601144 B1 on Dec. 3, 2013. The patent, entitled “Systems and methods for automatic ICE relay candidate creation,” was authored by Sansay CTO Gerald Ryner.
“Sansay’s WebSBC solves the problem of traversing restricted firewalls by allowing ICE media-relay candidates to be created automatically by the web application without forcing the clients to use a TURN server,” Ryner said. “The REST based auto-relay creation results in faster call-setup times by eliminating the need for the client to locate, request and authenticate itself to a network-based TURN server. The technology also improves the media-handling scalability, while reducing the threat of denial-of-service attacks that otherwise exist in typical TURN server deployments.”
The company is now shipping its WebSBCs that incorporate the patented process, which enables providers of “over-the-top” (OTT) services to offer new functions and features, such as media decryption, forking, recording and transcoding. Ryner said Sansay’s WebSBC also provides a control point for performing Quality of Service analysis and troubleshooting.
Gartner, Inc., the IT industry research and advisory firm, recently placed Sansay’s software-enabled SBCs in the “visionary” category of its latest “Magic Quadrant” report on SBCs.
